The Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami and Other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (ICG/CARIBE EWS) has identified public education and awareness as the most important aspect of the Caribbean Tsunami Warning System. Countries of the ICG/CARIBE EWS have agreed that in order to sustain education and awareness efforts throughout generations to come, the schools system should be an entry point for materials that are easily incorporated into Social Studies or Geography classes at the secondary level and that materials for the primary level should also be developed. What? A regional consultation for public awareness practitioners, , officials from the Ministries of Education, examination bodies, Youth Innovation Project, and tsunami experts to provide advice on select existing tsunami public awareness and teacher education products and contribute to develop the regional tsunami Public Awareness and Education (PAE) strategy. This meeting would also provide an opportunity to learn about regional (i.e. from CDEMA and or CEPREDENAC) led tsunami public awareness strategies and to provide avenues towards formally integrate tsunami teacher education materials into school safety programmes and secondary school curricula throughout the Caribbean. Objectives • Development of a Draft Caribbean PAE Strategy for tsunamis • Obtain expert advise on existing public awareness materials chosen by CTIC for wider dissemination • Learn about existing regional tsunami PAE strategies (i.e. CDEMA, CEPREDENAC) • Discuss on options to integrate tsunami teacher educational materials into school’ curricula. Outputs • Draft Regional Tsunami Public Awareness and Education Strategy produced • Expert Advice on tsunami PAE materials selected by CTIC • Recommendations to integrate tsunami teacher education materials into school curricula
